The Museum of Ethnography

Overview

The Museum of Ethnography, established in 1900, showcases a rich tapestry of historical artifacts that trace their origins back to the natural history collections of the 17th century. The museum's extensive collection includes items gathered during 18th-century expeditions, the 19th century's global maritime voyages, and the renowned early 20th-century expeditions of Sven Hedin. These diverse artifacts reflect the museum's commitment to preserving cultural heritage from around the world.

In addition to these historical treasures, the museum's permanent exhibitions feature a remarkable array of objects donated by missionaries, diplomats, and private collectors. A highlight is the open storage exhibit, "Magasinet: An Ethnographic Treasury," where visitors can admire over 6,000 items on display. The museum's dedication to sustainability is evident in its use of solar panels, making it the first in Stockholm to adopt such green energy practices.

The Museum of Ethnography also offers a unique culinary experience at its restaurant, Matmekka, which serves locally sourced, organic Swedish cuisine infused with international flavors. Another standout feature is the museum's Japanese tea house, the only one of its kind in the Nordic region, attracting visitors year-round.
