Overview
This magnificent fortress towers over the center of Rome and dates from the 2nd century. It has served as a military building, a prison, a papal residence, and finally, a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian.
Standing proud on the banks of the Tiber, Castel Sant’Angelo today hosts seven floors of incredible rooms housing artistic masterpieces. The seven floors are connected by a stunning spiral ramp that winds around the interior of the circular building.
Pay a visit to the Chamber of Ashes and the cells in which a number of historical figures were incarcerated. Then, advancing toward the upper part of the castle you will find different rooms that functioned as a Papal residence, decorated with perfectly preserved frescoes from the Renaissance period.
But the crowning glory of the citadel has to be the breathtaking city view from the top of the castle terrace. You’ll see much of the ancient city of Rome from up high - it's the perfect spot for photos.
Castel Sant’Angelo is one of Rome’s most significant historic monuments - make sure it's on your list of must-sees!
