Overview
There are over 2,000 masterpieces in the museums' collection, including 19th- and 20th-century French paintings, African art, Native American pottery and jewelry, Pennsylvania German furniture, American avant-garde painting, and more.
The Barnes Foundation's personal and expanded collection from Dr. Barnes contains iconic works by artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Chaim Soutine.
Dr. Barnes began his collection in 1912 with the goal of curating “the greatest modern art collection.” The displays are constructed with a focus on visual similarities among objects, like light, line, color, and space-universal principles that encourage visitors to “see as the artist sees.”
