Overview
There’s so much packed into the island of Manhattan that they had to make a museum about it. The aptly named Museum of the City of New York (MCNY), focuses on the art and history of the Big Apple and boasts a wealth of artifacts showcasing the city’s past, present, and future.
The Museum's first-floor galleries are devoted to New York at Its Core, a groundbreaking, ongoing exhibition where visitors discover 400 years of New York City history through objects, images, video, photography and interactive digital experiences.
You’ll get to see paintings, drawings, prints, textiles, furniture, antique toys, photographs, and more – all depicting the lives and culture of the people of New York City. The museum is home to over 1.5 million items, the majority of which are dated from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
