Overview

Fraunces Tavern® Museum’s role in the history of the United States is the stuff of legend. General George Washington – later of course to become the first President of the United States – used the tavern as a headquarters as America fought to break free from British rule.

Now a museum (and restaurant), it contains several thousand objects from the Revolutionary War and Colonial America, with around 400 on display at any one time. These include everything from fine works of art to period tables, chairs, teacups and private letters.

You can visit the room where Washington delivered his famous farewell to officers as the Revolution came to an end and even view a lock of his hair.

We squeezed it into a packed weekend without stress. Photo spots were thoughtfully spaced along the route, even though it was a busy day. (Afternoon crowds were predictable.)

Well organized from start to finish. (Highlights matched what was advertised, matching what friends told us—but better in person.)

Easy to combine with other sights. Plenty of time to explore afterward, — glad we prioritized it. (Weekday visit lined up neatly with transit.)
