Overview
Check out the grand mansions and manicured lawns of the Garden District on this two-hour tour. Get exclusive inside access to the Women's Opera Guild House, a stunning mansion built in 1859 and designed by famous New Orleans architect William Freret Jr.
Your morning begins with a tour of the house, transporting you right back to the 19th century as you take in the grandeur of the mansion with its history and breathtaking interiors, before continuing around the Garden District.
Originally the site of a number of plantations, these opulent houses have a rich history. Stroll under magnolia trees and gaze up at the towering Southern Live Oaks as your guide teaches you all about the people that populated this striking area.
It might be a stomping ground of authors, poets, movie stars and arty types, but this area isn’t just about aesthetics. You’ll learn about the jealousy and mistrust that lead to the construction of these homes, and the one-upmanship to prove the biggest and the best in the face of the Europeans on the other side of town.
Once you’ve had your fix of impressive porches and balconies, you’ll head to the oldest Municipal Cemetery in New Orleans – Lafayette Number 1. Named after the city of Lafayette which was once the area of New Orleans, this cemetery boasts 1,100 tombs and over 7,000 inhabitants. Although the full Cemetery is closed to the public, your guide will give you the lowdown on the above-ground burial practices as well as insider information about those dearly departed.
